Advanced Aqidah

This course will introduce students to an in-depth study of the development of Islamic theology, along with groups that formed as a result of the controversies; the names and contributions of the most prominent theologians of early and medieval Islam; and the primary methods that these theologians used to solve the intellectual questions that arose, with particular emphasis on the classical and medieval period of Islam.

Advanced Sirah

This course will introduce students to the classical sources of the seerah literature, its foundational authors and figures, the traditional overview of the life and times of the Prophet (SAW), the reception and development of the Seerah tradition, methods of benefitting from and defending the seerah, and modern issues of contention both within and from outside the tradition of Islam. Islam and Gender in the Contemporary Context
Instructors: Dr. Yasir Qadhi & Dr. Julie Lowe
This course introduces TISA’s students to contemporary controversies regarding gender and sexuality in the Quran and scholarly texts, with particular emphasis on modern Islamic feminism. TISA students have examined common radical reinterpretations of gender and sexuality, as well as the methodology behind them. Throughout the course, TISA Students will explore the overarching theme of the boundary between divine imperatives regarding gender and sexuality and human interpretation. Advanced Akhlaq & Spirituality
Instructor: Dr. Yasir Qadhi
This class will introduce the students to the Islamic concept of akhlāq, iḥsān, and ethics, and how they have been understood by various authorities and strands across Islamic history. The course will have multiple tracks, to reflect the various ideas and concepts under this broad discipline. There will be an academic track, in which people and concepts will be introduced. As well, we shall study sections from Imam al-Bukhārī’s al-Adab al-Mufrad, which is one of the source books on Islamic manners. On most weeks we will also tackle a very specific issue within the realm of ethics and discuss Islamic values surrounding them.
